Retailer PS HomeBoys is ‘mad for mod’

Palm Springs, California-based retailer PS HomeBoys is celebrating its midcentury modern vibe and the store’s anniversary with a Mad4Mod Weekend Feb. 17-18 and the launch of a capsule wallpaper collection.

Known for its bold and colorful midcentury modern designs — and its attention-grabbing bright pink doors, the 2,500-square-foot PS HomeBoys store grew out of a decades-old business that includes remodeling, design and installation services, real estate and staging throughout the Palm Springs desert communities.

“We feel having a retail showroom that we personally curated is our best asset of our design portfolio. Everything you see on display in our showroom has been handpicked and reflects our design vision,” say co-owners Niels Kosman and Jeremy Taylor. “We carry some exclusive vendors and local artists that no other showroom in Palm Springs has, so we are able to bring a unique ensemble of midcentury modern furniture to our clients. This gives our showroom a feel of exclusivity.”

The store officially opened in March 2021 but the owners say that given the “curveball” that Covid-19 and related restrictions threw at them the first year, they are billing this as the store’s first anniversary. Voted Best Furniture Store in the Coachella Valley by a Coachella Valley Independent reader poll, PS HomeBoys offers custom upholstery, lighting, decor, original art and wall coverings. That last category helps set the retailer apart in its market, especially given that the store follows up the sale by offering wallpaper installation for interior designers, stagers, vacation developers and consumers in the area.

The store in Palm Springs, California, draws attention with its playful midcentury modern vibe and its bright pink doors.

“We are the largest wall covering showroom in the Coachella Valley,” the owners say, “We carry all the main brands, but have also created collections that inspire us and are a reflection of the Palm Springs lifestyle.”

During the Mad4Mod weekend, PS HomeBoys will debut its new Icons wallpaper collection, featuring Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. Designed and sold exclusively through the store, the custom collection will debut as a small capsule with more designs to follow in the spring. “Our Icons collection is stunning, and we can’t wait for our Mad4Mod debut as these designs are exclusive to our brand and will help further set our brand apart from other retailers,” Taylor says.

Given its California location, outdoor is a strong category for the retailer, which, in addition to other furniture and accessories, offers a private-label line of corded Acapulco seating. “Our clients can completely customize each cord color and select different frame colors to really create a unique and individual look,” the owners say.

For indoor furniture and decor, Sagebrook Home is a strong-selling brand for the store. Much of its wall art is from Leftbank Art, which offers custom-color framing options that appeal to Kosman, Taylor and their clients.

Mad4Mod Weekend

Kosman and Taylor developed the Mad4Mod Weekend to coincide with the opening weekend of Palm Springs’ Modernism Week (Feb. 16-26). The kickoff Mad4Mod event will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 with a special meet-and-greet book signing with author Catherine Cody, daughter of midcentury architect William F. Cody. Cody’s book, “Master of the Midcentury: The Architecture of William F. Cody,” showcases the architect’s iconic work and is one of the first books to focus on the beauty of midcentury architecture in Palm Springs.

The Mad4Mod Weekend also will include a pop-up shop from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 with a series of special guest appearances. The headliner of the day will be local celebrities and power couple Deven Green and Ned Douglas, who the retailer calls “the epitome of midcentury modern” living “the quintessential Palm Springs lifestyle.” The pop-up shop also will feature collaborations with architect and artist Rob Welborn, and Parker Heath, creative artist and founder of PAR KER made.

“We couldn’t be more excited about our Mad4Mod Weekend events that we designed to bring a bit of excitement to our desert community,” say Taylor and Kosman. “Collaborating with Catherine Cody … and featuring local celebrities Deven Green and Ned Douglas, as well as collaborating with creative artists Rob Welborn & Parker Heath, is just some of the fun we have created for our customers’ enjoyment.”
